For a lot of those bloggers, myself included, having their blog hosted on one of the free blog hosting services will suit their needs perfectly. These are the bloggers who are blogging as a hobby more than anything else. However, there are a great many bloggers who would benefit from a web hosting service.
Self hosting your blog on one of the web hosting services gives you complete control of your blog. It is one of the better ways out there if you want to monetize your blog. With a lot of the free blog hosting services, you are not able to do everything you might want to do if you were self hosting through a web hosting service.
Depending on your needs, one of the web hosting services will probably have a service plan to meet your needs. Personal websites and blogs, can probably make due with a share hosting platform. Where a full fledged business website that needs more hosting space can go with a virtual private server or dedicated web hosting.

I would love to have a dedicated server working for my blog. But I imagine it is pretty expensive!
