Avon Sharper Image Camcorder

Happy Anniversary to me.  It is not a blogging anniversary, but tomorrow is my wedding anniversary.  You may or may not have noticed, but I have a banner on this blog for Avon.  It is for my wife who is now selling Avon, and it is a link to her site.  For my present, my wife bought a portable camcorder made by Sharper Image for Avon.

I am a gadget guy.  I love getting little electronic toys.  A couple weeks ago, I was browsing through one of my wife's Avon catalogs and saw this little camcorder.  So I casually mentioned that  it would make a great present for somebody, hint, hint.  She was originally going to give it to me as a Christmas present, but decided to give it to me for our anniversary so that I could show it to some co-workers who might be interested in it.

The camcorder is very compact.  It can easily fit into a shirt pocket or purse.  In addition to being a camcorder, it also comes with the following functions, digital camera, photo album, mp3 player, mp4 video player, games, calendar, FM radio, e-book, voice recorder, and PC web camera.  It comes with 128MB flash memory built in and can be expanded to 4GB with a mini SD card.  It also comes with earbuds, USB cable, electric charger, and carrying case.

As a camera, it really doesn't take high resolution photos.  It does take pretty clear pictures that could probably make decent 4x6 prints.  For my purposes, though, I will most likely use it for snapshots to use for this blog.  It works pretty well for those purposes.  Below is a snapshot taken with the camera.

The camcorder function is pretty nice, and the best feature on the camera.  It is not a high def camera that you will want to watch on TV, but for nice basic videos to share on YouTube or for blogging, it does the job for me.  The video example below is kind of shaky because I was walking while recording.  I think, though, that you get a pretty good idea of the video quality.

About the only thing that I don't like about the camera is that there is no zoom feature at all.  You also need it to be fairly bright.  I am not sure if it was the brightness in the house, or the CFL bulbs we use, but the pictures that I took in my house had a bit of a greenish yellow hue.

All in all, though, I am pretty happy with my anniversary gift.  I think it would make a great gift for a husband or a wife.  It will soon be on sale at my wife's Avon site for $79 with a $20 purchase.  The regular price is $129.

UPDATE:
At the request of a commenter, I am adding a new picture to this post at the highest resolution available on the camera.  This is 1280x960.  If you click on the picture it will open at full size.

  1. Congrats on the anniversary. Looking forward to seeing more original pics and videos on your site.

P.S., tell your co-worker it's time to switch the calendar over to November.

  2. Hello, are the videos 640x320 or 320x240? What is the size in pixels of a still photo from this camera? Could you post one full still photo at its original size? At the moment I cannot find any other information about this camera anywhere on the web, but it does look interesting!

  3. MIke,good eye on the calendar and thanks

Anonymous-the videos are at 352x288. If you click on the picture of my coworker's cubicle, it opens to full resolution of 640x480 pixels. The highest it goes to is 1280x960 and I will post one of those as an update shortly.

  4. what is the length of time it can record for?

    ReplyDelete
  5. the manual doesn't say if there is a time limit on how long it will record. It may depend on how much memory you have on it

    ReplyDelete
  6. Thank you for the fullsize still.

  7. Does the manual specify what type of memory card it uses?
    SD? Mini SD? Mini SDHC?
    Micro SD? Micro SDHC?
    Thanks!

  8. I know the camera has autofocus, but does it have a zoom in and zoom out feature?

    ReplyDelete
  9. sadly, no zoom. one of the drawbacks of the camera

    ReplyDelete
  10. SO how do you change the pixels for the pics?

  11. I did have some conflicts with the camcorder. I have window XP home addition and it shuts down my computer every time I try to plug it into it. Don't know if anyone else has had problems but thought I would pass this along. Sad that I couldn't use it with my computer.

  12. I use it with Ubuntu, absolutely flawless.
The system sees it as a drive and I can drop and drag music, photos, movies etc. to and from the device. When I first installed it I had to install a few codecs for it to work, but that's a one time installation.

BTW I fired Microsoft and their bloated OS.
Linux and its derivatives are the way to go and are the future in computing.

  13. Hi! Could you please tell me why you can't get the radio station that you might want to listen to? It will not go to 101.5 or 97.3. It scans right over it.

    Thanks,

    princesalinda22@hotmail.com

  14. Maybe because the signal is not strong enough?
You need to manually tune don't scan tune.

  15. I got this camera too and im just a bit lost on the size of micro SD, its so small how do you get it back out of the camera? does it get lost in there?

    ReplyDelete
  16. LOL, no, you just press on the edge of the card and it should pop back out.I hope that helped you.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I couldn't play the videos either until I installed the codecs on the cd rom.

James is correct that you press the edge of the card and it pops out.

I haven't had much success listening to the radio either. Figured the signal wasn't getting into the building I was in.

  18. I'm glad that Dickster started a blog on this neat little device. There is absolutely no information relating to this gadget on the internet except the Avon site and it's just a generic description at best.Even the Sharper image does'nt show it. Truth be known I see loads of similiar devices on Ebay that are sold direct from China. My best guess is that the Sharper Image got a deal on a boatload of these and is marketing them thru Avon as a loss leader or such. Just my opinion.
It's not a bad device. Actually it's quite handy and fairly well made. It's just that it does'nt do any one function great. Because of all that it's called upon to do I feel.
For the price it's great to play with.

  19. Thanks James,

I was manually setting the station but I could not find those two stations on it. It had 101.4 then the next was 101.6 when it should have been 101.5. They should also give better instructions with this gadget.

  20. No Problem Linda.
That's a problem. It should tune to a frequency like 101.5 not 101.4. Sounds like the frequency spacing is off.
In that case you won't receive the station.
Interesting...mine does not have that problem.Does anyone else have this issue?

Is there a read me file on the CD? Sometimes that has better instructions.
There may or may not be a way to adjust the channel spacing.

I agree the instructions stink.Even the sharper image is no help. I'll help you figure this out. I am going to search this one out.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

  21. Thanks James,

I appreciate your help. The radio was one of the reasons I bought it. I'm also trying to figure out how to erase a video that I don't want on it. Do you have any instructions on that?

    Thanks again,

    Linda

  24. Hi, I've now ordered and received 2 wrong size memory cards for this camera! Can anyone please tell me where to find the correct size. I've gotten a mini SD that is too big and a micro SD that is too small. I've been to 6 different electronics stores and they are all totally clueless as to where to find them. Any info would be appreciated!

  25. hey jane...

the micro sd card that i have found to fit inside well was the same as that of which would go inside your cell phone for extended memory

  28. Sorry Linda I've been busy...
I can't find anything on this at all.
My unit works on the FM so I would say you have a defect.
If you can bring it back, I would.
    While you can.
I wish I could be of more help.
    James

  38. i cant figure out how to delete the pictures off the camera. I've been playing around with it for months now. This camera sucks. I love my Canon Power shot so much better. I'm about to just let my one year old daughter use it as a toy. Please if anyone can help me delete the pics I'd appreciate it. If u hold the Menu button down as Ur hovered over the video u want to delete it'll give you a new menu and allow you to select delete all videos. the picture file however does not give that option.. Nykki

  39. Hi Nikki,

Thank you! I will try to delete the videos the way you said. I agree with you. This contraption really sucks. It's a complete waste of money!

    Thanks again,

  40. My children bought the ccmcorder for me for Christmas,I find that if you're not in a well lit place the pictures come out dark the same with the videoes. I have yet to figured out how to delete. The only thing I like about it is that it is small and compact, the radio and the games. The manual was a complete waste of paper, it was of no use. It was a total waste of their hard earned money.

  41. Hi Nykki,

I tried to delete videos like you said. I didn't know what to do after it asked if I wanted to delete. What do I push or do to delete after it asks?

    Thanks,
    Linda

  42. Hi All,

Can anybody help with my previous question?

    Thanks,

    Linda

  43. Linda, have you tried connecting it to your computer via usb, and when you bring the pix or video's up on the computer, right click and choose "delete"? I don't know it this will work but it's worth a shot (maybe)...

    J.W.

  44. Thanks J.W.,

I did exactly that and it solved the problem. I also sent it back. I don't think it was worth the money or trouble.

    Thanks again,

    Linda
