Music Monday-Thomas Rhett "Beer With Jesus"

They always do those surveys where they ask people if they could have dinner with any person in history, who would it be. Always at the top or near the top of the list would be Jesus. I know he would be at the top of my list.

Thomas Rhett's new song "Beer With Jesus" takes the idea of having dinner with Jesus another step to sitting with Jesus in a bar, having a beer, and a conversation. While some of my old Baptist friends might not think that a possibility, when I read the Gospel accounts of the life of Jesus I can't help but think that He would be willing to sit and have a conversation over a beer. After all, take a look at His life, He changed water into wine, He was accused of being a glutton and a drunkard, and He was known to associate with sinners. So I don't think it would be a stretch for Him to have a conversation over a beer.

Music Monday-Mitch McVicker "Awaken Me to Love"

Ever since the election two weeks ago, I have been contemplating things on a more spiritual level. Rather than listening to conservative, political talk radio, I have been listening to Christian radio and some of my old Christian Contemporary Music CDs.

On the music front, I have been listening to a lot of Rich Mullins. Mitch McVicker is a Christian musician who happened to have been close friends with Rich. In fact, he was in the vehicle when the accident occurred that took Rich Mullins home. Here is one of his latest tunes.

Music Monday-Night Ranger "When You Close Your Eyes"

One of my favorite bands from the 80's, Night Ranger, has a new album coming out in a few weeks. It is a live, acoustic CD and DVD of their greatest hits. It sounds like it will be interesting. I will have to think about picking it up. Besides, Jack Blades, one of the lead vocalists with Night Ranger has thrown his support behind Mitt Romney and performed at the GOP convention. So he has to have my support.

Music Monday-Billy Joel "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant"

Today was one of those perfect weather days. Temperatures were in the low 70's with low humidity. I was able to drive home with the windows down, the sun roof open, and the radio cranked up. It reminded me of a line from this song that goes "riding around with the car top down and the radio on." So, Billy Joel's "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" is my Music Monday choice this week.

I have been thinking a lot lately about photography. It is a hobby that I have enjoyed over the years. I really want to pursue it with a bit more energy than I have in the past. I decided to start a photography blog called Dick Stone Photography. I have already posted a few pictures there. I am also considering signing up to take a photography course through the NY Institute of Photography to try to hone my skills.

Music Monday-Phil Keaggy "Maker of the Universe"

Several years ago, when I was in college, I belonged to a young adult group at the church I was attending. A handful of us decided to attend a music festival in Pennsylvania called "Creation" which I dubbed Woodstock for Christians. At that event, I saw Phil Keaggy performing. At one point, he played Amazing Grace on his electric guitar and made it sound like bag pipes. I was hooked on Keaggy from that moment on. This is one of my favorite acoustic songs by him.

Music Monday-Phil Stacey "Hard to Get"

Just prior to his untimely death in an automobile accident, Rich Mullins had recorded some very rough demos that would later be released as a 2-CD set entitled The Jesus Record. One CD was the rough demos of Rich performing the songs. The second CD was several of Christian Contemporary Music's biggest starts performing the songs.

Even though I am not currently involved with a church, I still like to listen to Christian music and read Christian books. Whenever I feel like things are particularly closing in around me or I just feel small in the face of everything, there are two Rich Mullins songs that become a prayer for me.

The first one is Hold Me Jesus which I featured in the Music Monday post here. The second one is this song from The Jesus Record, performed by Phil Stacey. The lyrics are unbelievably moving.

Music Monday-Keb Mo "We Don't Need It"

I saw this video the other day on Great American Country television. I was really kind of surprised to see Keb Mo on a country station as he is more closely tied to Blues, though he did do an awesome cover of Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues. I am not sure that I would classify it as a "country" song, but it is definitely a country theme. The man loses his job, doesn't want to disappoint his family, but discovers that family is all that is important.

Music Monday-Big and Rich "That's Why I Pray"

One day last week I was driving home from work listening to the Sean Hannity radio program. This particular afternoon, one of his guests was John Rich from the country duo Big & Rich. During the show, they played the new single from the duo. The thing about Big & Rich is that they run the gamut from rowdy and tacky songs to deep, meaningful songs. That's Why I Pray falls in the latter.

Music Monday-The Bee Gees "I Started a Joke"

Yesterday, on Sunday, May 20th, Robin Gibbs of the Bee Gees passed away after a long battle with cancer. Robin, along with twin brother Maurice and older brother Barry formed one of the most popular musical acts of all time with a career that began in the 1960's. Much will be written about how they were a driving force of the disco era. That they were, but they were also very popular for a decade before that and it is that music that I prefer to the disco era. Though I do confess that I did see them in concert during the height of their disco popularity.

Rest in Peace, Robin. Give our best to Maurice and Andy.
