Eat Mor Chikin

So what's the fuss?  The president of Chick-fil-A believes in traditional marriage and disagrees with gay marriage.  That puts him in the same company as at least half of the country.  I say "at least half" because even though polls show the country about evenly split and maybe a small majority favor gay marriage, in every state that has put the initiative on the ballot, not one state has had a result in favor of gay marriage.

Chick-fil-A's president, Dan Cathy, is a devout Christian.  That is why you can't go pick up a Chick-fil-A sandwich on a Sunday after church.  If the man was strictly in business for the money, he could easily open on Sundays and make even more money.  I have to admire a man who has principals and stands for those principals.

Cathy's statements in support of traditional marriage has brought out the worst in the leftist arsenal.  Democrat mayors are out there stating that they do not want Chick-fil-A to operate restaurants in their cities.  College campuses are doing the same thing. Many are calling for boycotts of the chain. The left is always quick to call for tolerance and civility.  The funny thing is, they never want to practice tolerance and civility towards those that hold different opinions from them.

Those that want to boycott Chick-fil-A are free to decide how they want to spend their money, but they are missing out on a good chicken sandwich.  I learned a long time ago, that it doesn't make sense to boycott companies, or for that matter entertainers, that I disagree with politically.  If that were the case, I would have to give up all of my Jimmy Buffett music, and that ain't gonna happen.

It is funny, a friend posted a picture on Facebook that said "So you stopped eating at Chick-fil-A because the owner of the company thinks homosexuality is wrong.  Tell me, when are you going to stop buying gasoline because the owners of OPEC put homosexuals to death."  The left never seems to fully think through these things.

I do not have real strong feelings either way regarding gay marriage.  I do, however, have a lot of respect for those that have strong religious principals and stand for them.  I have only eaten at Chick-fil-A a handful of times, however, I am more apt to do so out of respect for Dan Cathy standing on principal.  Besides, it just might piss off a liberal, and nothing would make me happier.

Music Monday-Phil Keaggy "Maker of the Universe"

Several years ago, when I was in college, I belonged to a young adult group at the church I was attending. A handful of us decided to attend a music festival in Pennsylvania called "Creation" which I dubbed Woodstock for Christians. At that event, I saw Phil Keaggy performing. At one point, he played Amazing Grace on his electric guitar and made it sound like bag pipes. I was hooked on Keaggy from that moment on. This is one of my favorite acoustic songs by him.

Romney, Mormons, and Cults

Image via WikipediaThey say that there are two things that you should never bring up in polite company if you want to keep things civil, religion and politics.  Today I am going to go where angles fear to tread and talk about both.  The two subjects became intertwined once again at the Value Voters Summit held in DC over the past weekend.

Pastor Robert Jeffress, a Baptist minister and supporter of Texas Governor Rick Perry, brought up the subject of Mitt Romney's Mormon Faith.  Jeffress said that Mormonism was a non-Christian cult and that Christians would be better off supporting an evangelical Christian for president than Romney.  In his view, Romney, as a Mormon would be unfit to be president.

Before I get to far into the comments of Jeffress, it would probably be best to actually define the term cult.  For this, I turn to Hank Hanegraaff, also know as The Bible Answer Man of the Christian Research Institute.  I used to listen to his radio program several years ago when I was very active in the Baptist Church.

When most people think of a cult, they think of the following definition:

a cult is a religious or semi-religious sect whose members are controlled almost entirely by a single individual or by an organization.

However, there is another way to define a cult, and this is the method that a lot of evangelicals use when describing a cult:

a cult is any group that deviates from the orthodox teachings of the historic Christian faith being derived from the Bible and confirmed through the ancient ecumenical creeds.

It is from this perspective that Jeffress made his assertion that Romney belongs to a cult.  During my days when I was active within evangelical circles, it was a common assertion that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints were members of a cult.  I also heard some claim that the Roman Catholic Church was the biggest cult in existence.  It is one of the reasons that I no longer travel in those circles.

Personally, I do not agree with a lot of the Mormon Church.  I would never belong to it.  Here is not the time, nor the place to go into all of the reasons why.  Over the years I have had several friends who were members of the LDS.  I would say that they are a fine group of people who have high moral standards.  A few years ago, when my wife was looking for an alternative to Catholicism, she decided on the LDS.

I will also say, that as of this moment, I do not support Mitt Romney as the potential Republican nominee for President.  Right now, I have not fully made up my mind, but I am leaning towards Herman Cain.  As Romney said himself in one of the debates, there are a lot of reasons not to vote for him, as there are for the other potential candidates.  However, the fact that he is a Mormon should not even be part of the discussion.

Music Monday-Europe "The Final Countdown"

Today, the Space Shuttle Endeavour took off on its final mission as NASA’s space shuttle era is rapidly drawing to a close. When I was a kid, I was fascinated by pictures of outer space. I had my telescope and I would sit outside gazing at the moon and the solar system. I remember going out on a friend’s sailboat one time to watch the Perseid meteor shower. Therefore, I think it is appropriate to have Europe's "The Final Countdown" as my pick for Music Monday.

On a slightly different note, a group of Christians, led by Harold Camping, have declared that Saturday, May 21, 2011 will be Judgment Day when Jesus Christ returns to rapture his church.  Camping has made these proclamations before, and has obviously been wrong.  While I do believe that day will one day come, there are a number of reasons why I believe they are out to lunch.  Suffice to say that if they are correct, we would be in a "Final Countdown" of a totally different kind.
