Gilbert Arenas and Guns

Last week, I heard the news that Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas was under investigation for having unloaded guns stored in his locker.  At the time, I did not think much of it.  As a high profile athlete, I could understand if he felt the need to have a weapon to protect himself.  Under the 2nd Amendment, I whole heartedly believe he has that right.

Today, the story took another twist.  An ESPN
report says Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton drew guns on each other.  The story is that the two teammates were having an argument because Arenas was refusing to pay a gambling debt.  It is alleged that Arenas pulled a weapon on Crittenton.  In response, Crittenton pulled his own weapon.

While I fully support the right to keep and bear arms under the second amendment, there are responsibilities that go along with that right.  In my opinion, the only legitimate reason to ever pull a gun on another human being is if you are in imminent danger.  A prime example is if somebody has broken into your home and you feel threatened.

If true, this goes well beyond the acceptable use of carrying a gun.  To pull a gun, loaded or not, on another person out of anger is a criminal act, not to mention completely asinine.  It adds nothing but fuel to the fire for those liberals that want to restrict gun ownership rights.  I hope the story is false, because I have always liked Gilbert Arenas since he joined the Wizards.  He always seemed to be a decent guy.  However, if the story is true, he should go to jail or at the very least, not play basketball in the NBA for a very long time.
