Music Monday-George Harrison "Here Comes the Sun"

I have always loved The Beatles. Many years ago, when I was in college, I worked with a young lady who was a year or two older than I was.  Her favorite Beatles song was "Here Comes the Sun."

Well, I wanted to go out with her, but she was dating another guy.  However, being a guy and a guitar player, I put a little plan in motion.  I learned how to play every riff of "Here Comes the Sun."  I made arrangements to meet her on campus to play a few songs.

After I finished playing "Here Comes the Sun," she complimented me and told me that it was her favorite song.  I replied, "I know.  I learned that song for you."  It nearly worked.

A couple days later, I was talking to her on the phone.  She called to tell me that the guy she had been dating had asked her to marry him and she said yet.  She also told me that she really liked when I sang for her, and that she had considered breaking up with the other guy.

I wished her well and her fiance well.  In the back of my mind I remember thinking, "Yeah, this will last.  Just how solid a relationship will they have if she would consider breaking up because some guy played a song for her on the guitar."  I think every guy who ever learned to play guitar does it to impress the fairer sex.

In addition to George Harrison, this particular version of "Here Comes the Sun" features, Eric Clapton and Jeff Lynne (from ELO) on guitars, Ringo Starr and Phil Collins on drums, and Elton John on piano.

Meet the Beatles-45th Anniversary

John Lennon 1940-1980

28 years ago today, John Lennon was shot four times by Mark David Chapman. Just three weeks earlier, John had released his first album in over five years, Double Fantasy. Lennon had always been my favorite member of the Beatles. I remember how excited I was that he had released new material and had started a musical comeback. I also remember how devastated I was at hearing the news of his death. In memory and honor of John Lennon, here is (Just Like) Starting Over.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band-The Movie

It was thirty years ago today that Sgt. Pepper, the movie, with the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton was released and quickly became one of the worst movies of all time, and I SAW IT. I should have known better than to think anyone other than the Beatles themselves could make this film. At the time though, the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton were on top of the musical world. Most of the musical performances were solid. Some of it outstanding, like Aerosmith and their version of "Come Together," and Billy Preston performing "Get Back." Then you have performances like Steve Martin doing "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" that just make you cringe. The acting and storyline, however, was down right lame.

The Beatles-40 Years Ago Today

Forty years ago today, the Beatles made their final live television appearance on the David Frost Show. A couple years later the band would suffer an acrimonious break up and never get back together. Really, when you stop and think about it, the Beatles were on the scene for a very short period of time. Yet, forty years later, their music is still relevant. More importantly, their music is timeless. Without a doubt, they were the most influential rock band of all time. Here, from 40 years ago today, The Beatles, performing "Hey Jude."
