I Surrender All

Usually, when I read a book I read a little at a time.  A chapter or two a day.  For most books, it usually takes about a week or so for me to finish.  The book I just finished yesterday, I Surrender All: Rebuilding a Marriage Broken by Pornography by Clay and Renee Crosse was finished over a two day time period.

There are a couple of reasons why this book was read so much more quickly than most books.  First, I have been off of work the last two days so I have had some more free time on my hands.  My son has also been home, so he has been playing some games on my laptop.  With him sitting next to me playing, I would read. Another big reason that I read the book so quickly is that I found myself relating to Clay Crosse's story.

Clay Crosse made his name in the Contemporary Christian Music field. He had several big hits, won Dove Awards (the Contemporary Christian Music version of the Grammy) and toured the country performing his music.  Crosse has been a professed Christian most of his life.  The book details his addiction to pornography and how it almost cost him everything he held dear.

Crosse was exposed to pornography at an early age when he was in the fourth grade.  He reveals that it started with some magazines and eventually moved on to movies.  As he delved more and more into the world of pornography, he needed it to become more graphic and more intense.  The more he watched, the more he wanted to live out those fantasies that played in his mind.

While he never physically committed adultery, he knew it was just a matter of time before he would give in to the temptation.  He came to the realization that he needed help.  He also confessed his double life to his wife.  Her part of the book talks about her feelings and how she came to forgive him and rebuild their marriage.  It was not easy.

The key for the couple in turning around their lives was in turning to faith.  While both of them had been professing Christians most of their lives, they were living a superficial form of Christianity.  Both were more concerned about how God could bless them and not in having a deep relationship with God.  They were both caught up in the material blessings of success, and Clay had the added burden of lust through pornography.

By discovering that their faith was lacking, they were able to build a deeper faith.  It allowed them to save a marriage that was on the brink of collapse.  Eventually, their story became a ministry to help others who were struggling with similar issues.  God was able to take the bad in their lives and turn it into something good and positive.

I think that everybody could benefit from their story, whether or not they are struggling with issues like lust and pornography.  The root of their problem were not these things, but rather the focus on themselves and not on God.  By refocusing on the right things, they were able to get back on the right track.  That is not to say that they don't still struggle, but that they now know better how to stay on track.

Osama bin Laden-Porn Aficionado

Peep show window displaying pornographic enter...Image via WikipediaEver since the raid on the Osama bin Laden compound, more and more has been revealed each day about what was found during the raid.  We have heard about all of the computers and flash drives that were taken.  Then there was the news of bin Laden's handwritten journals.  Yesterday, we learned that they also found a stash of pornographic material.

Who knew?  I suppose their might be some that would be surprised that bin Laden would be an aficionado of pornography.  It doesn't surprise me in the least for a couple of reasons.  The first is my recollection of a news story of internet search trends and the second is from personal experience; both of which I will share below.

About a year or so ago, there were a few stories published about top search terms on the internet.  In one story, it was revealed that  according to Google trends, 7 of the top 10 countries that searched for sex on the internet were predominantly Muslim countries.  Leading the pack among countries looking for online pornography was Pakistan.  Those were just little nuggets of information that stick in the back of my mind because I find them amusing or titillating.

The second is from personal experience, so it amounts to a bit of a confession.  Several years ago, I had a collection of adult oriented DVDs that I wanted to try to sell because I was in need of some money.  They were just sitting in the basement collecting dust, so if I could get a few dollars for them it would be no loss.  I was searching the internet for a place to sell them.  I came across a site that would set you up with your own online store to sell adult toys and movies.  Since the online adult entertainment industry was a multi-million dollar industry, I took the plunge and bought a sight.  I lost my shirt.

When I had that site, I used Statcounter as my hit counter to see how many visitors I had, where they came from, and what keywords they were using.  At the time, I was surprised to see some of the locations that showed up as visiting my humble store.  Here are some of the predominantly Muslim locations that showed up in my stats; Tehran, Iran; Islamabad, Pakistan; Saudi Arabia; Iraq; and Indonesia.  Just another of those little nuggets that stuck in my mind.

Tiger & the Porn Star-Part 2

IMG_1157A - Joslyn JamesImage by Jimi Photog via Flickr
Back in February, when Tiger Woods finally made a public statement of apology after the news of all of his marital infidelities came out, there was one person who made a big to do about the fact that Tiger did not apologize to her or the other women that Tiger fooled around with.  That person was porn star Joslyn James.

After Tiger's press conference, Joslyn held her own press conference to air her grievances (I guess she couldn't wait until Festivus for the Airing of the Grievances.)  Among her complaints was that she had given up her porn career for Tiger because he asked her to.  I remember thinking as I watched the press conference video, that she still looked like she could perform in her previous line of work.  I didn't put those thoughts in my post at that time, because I thought it might sound a little crass.

In the time since that initial press conference, Ms. James just doesn't seem to want to go away.  Tiger never did apologize publicly to her or the other adulteresses.  As the old saying goes, Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.  So it is with Joslyn James.  First she released several sexually explicit text messages she received from Tiger.  Then she went on a tour as a featured dancer at strip clubs across the country.

Somehow, I always knew that James would end up on her feet, or should I say her back.  James continues to try to cash in on her notoriety as one of Tiger's playthings.  Earlier this month, Vivid released a new movie starring James.  Of course it is a porno spoof with the title "The 11th Hole."  Each scene is based on the text messages that James received from Tiger, and the title is a play on her being Wood's 11th mistress.
