On the day that the GOP convention was set to open, albeit on a scaled back program due to Hurricane Gustav, Sarah Palin announced that her oldest daughter is five months pregnant. The 17 year old girl had decided to keep the baby, and plans to marry the father of the child. Palin asks that the media respect the privacy of the children.
A spokesman for the McCain campain said that McCain was aware of the pregnancy. Part of the reason for the announcement was an effort to refute rumors on the liberal blogosphere that Palin had faked her pregnancy that resulted in her fifth child, Trig, who has Down's Syndrome. The rumors claim that Trig is actually her daughter's baby and that Palin is the grandmother.
It will be interesting to see how the mainstream media and the Obama campaign handle this news. This should have no bearing whatsoever on Palin's qualifications. This is and should be a private family matter.
